Admissions

Any member of the University may borrow books from the Casimir Lewy Library. In order to register, readers need to present their University card at the Issue Desk when they visit the Library for the first time. Others may use the Library on application to the Librarian. Please note: there is no registration of new readers on Saturdays.

Where is the Library?

The Casimir Lewy Library is situated on the University's Sidgwick Site, which is about half a mile from the town centre, along Sidgwick Avenue. The Philosophy Faculty is on the third floor of the Raised Faculty Building, and the Library is down on the second floor.

How do I find the books I need?

The key to finding books is to use the Library Catalogue. It will tell you if we have a book or journal, where it is and if it's already on loan to another reader. The Library uses its own classification scheme consisting of a letter and one or more numbers. Make a note of the classmark. The Reference section F starts the classified sequence, which is followed by sections A to E. The Periodical section G finishes the sequence (see Appendix 1 in the Library Guide for the Classification Scheme). Some rarely used books are kept in a store outside the main Library. Books from the store need to be fetched by a member of the Library Staff and it may take up to 24 hours to have these books ready for collection. Books in heavy demand and offprints are held at the Issue Desk.

I tried to renew my books online, but I was not able to do so. What should I do?

Please contact the Library Issue Desk on (01223) 762939 and we will look into it. Please note that books cannot be renewed online more than 3 times, outside the Library's opening hours, or if they have been reserved by another reader. Please make sure that you have time to return the books to the Library, if necessary.

I didn't receive a reminder about my overdue items. Do I still have to pay the fine?

Yes! Emails to remind readers that they have items about to become overdue is a courtesy service only. It is the reader's responsibility to ensure that loans are renewed or returned on time. Due dates are shown on the date labels when items are first issued, and this information can be seen through the 'my library account' section on the Library catalogue. The Library does not accept responsibility for the failure or delay of email or post.
